The Kansas City Royals announced the firing of president of baseball operations Dayton Moore on Wednesday.

He had been with the organization since 2006 as a general manager before being promoted to president of baseball operations last year.

But owner John Sherman is apparently disappointed at the direction of the franchise under Moore.

Last year, the Royals finished with a 74-88 record; but this year, they have been significantly worse at 59-89 despite having, arguably, a more talented roster.

Moore has been separated from his position, but general manager JJ Picollo retained his as the general manager, at least for now.

When asked on Wednesday about manager Mike Matheny and his future, Sherman offered a quote that pretty much confirms the former St. Louis Cardinals skipper is, indeed, on the hot seat.

“John Sherman: (on Mike Matheny) That’s JJ’s job to evaluate that. Im interested in his thoughts,” Blair Kerkhoff, who covers the Royals for the Kansas City Star, tweeted.

Will Matheny Remain With The Royals For Next Season?

Matheny has been leading the Royals from the dugout since 2020, when he had a 26-34 record.

Then he was 74-88 last year, mainly fueled by a career-best season by catcher Salvador Perez, and 59-89 this year.

Overall, Matheny has a 139-179 record with a mediocre .437 winning percentage with the Royals.

He is not particularly highly-regarded in baseball as one of the best managers in the league, and some fans have been calling for an upgrade from the dugout for some time now.

Piccolo will likely have some kind of contact with the media soon, in which he will likely be asked about Matheny’s future.

Times are changing in Kansas City, and Matheny’s job is very much in jeopardy after the season.
